Fundamental questions
and collider solutions

Particle Physics has arrived at an important moment of its history. The  discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC completes the matrix of particles and interactions that has constituted the „Standard Model” for now several decades. The Standard Model is a very consistent and predictive theory, which has proven extraordinarily successful at describing the vast majority of phenomena accessible to experiment.

At the same time, we know that the story is not over. Several experimental facts require extension of the Standard Model, in particular: i) in the composition of the observable Universe matter largely dominates antimatter; ii) the well known evidence for dark matter from astronomical and cosmological observations; and, iii) more closely to particle physics, not only neutrinos have masses, but these masses are about 10^-7 times smaller than those of that of the electron. To these experimental facts can be added a number of theoretical issues of the Standard Model. The problem faced by Particle Physics is that the possible solutions to these questions require the existence of new particles or phenomena that can occur over an immense range of mass scales and coupling strengths.

In order to tackle these issues, new experimental facilities with a very broad observation capabilities will be required. CERN is presently investigating a new 100 km complex allowing several type of colliders to be built, which by a blend of high precision and high energy offer a very large range of sensitivity to new phenomena.

Prof. Alain Blondel jest jednym z czołowych eksperymentatorów w fizyce cząstek elementarnych (udział w eksperymentach Gargamelle, HERA, LEP, LHC, K2K, T2K,…). Wyróżnienia, między innymi: nagroda Thibaud Foundation (pomiar liczby neutrin), nagroda Paul Langevina Francuskiej Akademii Nauk (polaryzacja wiązki LEP), medal Manne Siegbahna Królewskiej Akademii Nauk Szwecji (precyzyjny pomiar masy i czasu rozpadu bozonu Z), nagroda Jean Ricarda Francuskiego Towarzystwa Fizycznego, nagroda Suwa (z grupą T2K). Wieloletni członek komitetu polityki naukowej CERN. Jego obecne zainteresowania to głównie fizyka neutrin oraz praca nad konstrukcją przyszłych akceleratorów FCC (Future Circular Colliders) w CERN-ie.
